Clare Lesser

Musician and researcher

Clare Lesser is a performer and musicologist. She has published widely on twentieth- and twenty-first-century music, and as a performer, focuses on twentieth-century and contemporary repertoire. She was a senior lecturer and the Program Head of Music at New York University Abu Dhabi where she also founded UAE ElectroFest. Her most recent publication explores hauntology in works by John Cage and Luigi Nono: Cage, Nono and 1960s Hauntology (Cambridge University Press). Her research covers deconstruction, indeterminate and improvised music and performance, graphic notation, and analogue technology in music. Current projects include a monograph for Palgrave Macmillan, exploring radio as an agent of radical decentring in Cage and Stockhausen’s music, a chapter on parergon in H.-J. Hespos’s vocal works, and a second album of Michael Finnissy’s vocal music.
